Air Hockey Rules Of Play

Air hockey is an exciting and fast-paced game that has gained immense popularity worldwide. It is a game that involves two players, each trying to score a goal by shooting a puck into the opponent’s goal using a paddle. Like any other sport, air hockey has its own set of rules that players must adhere to for a fair and enjoyable game. In this article, we will discuss the rules of play for air hockey.

The Setup

Before the game begins, the players must decide who will start with possession of the puck. The players can flip a coin, play rock-paper-scissors or any other method of their choosing. The player who wins the toss starts with the puck. The puck is placed in the center of the table, and the game begins.

The Objective

The objective of air hockey is to score seven points before your opponent. A point is scored when the puck enters the opponent’s goal. If the puck enters the goal after hitting the opponent’s hand or arm, the goal does not count.

The Touch Rule

Players are not allowed to touch the puck with anything other than their paddle. If a player touches the puck with their hand or arm, the game is paused, and possession of the puck is given to the opponent.

The Mallet Rule

Players are not allowed to lift the mallet from the table. Lifting the mallet results in a foul, and possession of the puck is given to the opponent.

The Offside Rule

The offside rule in air hockey is similar to that of soccer. If a player shoots the puck, and it goes past the opponent’s goal, it cannot be played again until it touches the opponent’s side of the table. If the opponent touches the puck before it crosses the centerline, the game is paused, and possession of the puck is given to the opponent.

The Stalemate Rule

If the puck remains in the same spot for more than 10 seconds, the game is paused, and possession of the puck is given to the opponent.

The Timeout Rule

Each player is allowed one timeout during the game. A timeout can be called by either player at any time during the game.

In conclusion, these are the basic rules of play for air hockey. Adhering to these rules ensures a fair and enjoyable game for both players. Remember to always play by the rules and have fun!
